WEEK 9, 10, 11

DIALOGUE, MISE-EN-SCENE AND EXPERIMENTAL

-----

citizen kane
city of god
battleship potemkim
霸王别姬

just some of the movies i have been watching to get inspirations.

-----

i strive to be as experimental as possible, if not i dunno when is the next best time to do it other than this class.

-----

i love to people watch. i enjoy that moment of thought that i put into it.

do i know this person?
what if im related to him?

it can happen in different situations, to different people and in so many different ways.

-----

this film is going to be largely based on my personal approach in trying to discover human connection and the lag they possess.

so entirely, the film will be shot with a handycam, incorporating the spy cam / voyueristic feel.
angles are going to be weird, lighting is going to be au naturale.

emphasizing on just the lag of the human connection, im going to omit sounds and atmospheric sounds. make it like a silent film.

-----

this is an excerpt of my script.

ME

(to myself)

Hi, do I know you?

That certain time.

That certain moment.

That certain place.

That certain situation.

That certain people.

That certain person.

When you feel you almost know the person.

INT. TRAIN CARRIAGE – DAY

Character A is seated down in the train carriage doing his/her thing with the scenery outside zooming pass fast.

ME

(to A)

Hello.

Have we met before?

Character A

NO

-----

*edit.

im surprised no one chose to do anything experimental.

apparently, the comments i received for my film that it was too silent and the sound quality is lacking in the dialogue.

therefore my V2.0 shall take this into consideration.

maybe the dialogue is too short.

-----

i've added a monologue.

i've up the sound quality.

i've added more 'no' answers. (variations)

but i still kept some scenes silent to keep the essence of the silent film going.

WEEK 5,6,7

IMAGE SEQUENCING AND SOUNDS

-----

la jetee
was screened to us during class. had a total different outtake when i first watched it during my poly days.

-----

during one of the days when my grandma visited, as she was about to leave the house, she held my hand and looked at me. then she said: 婆婆老了。

that moment just paused.

i suddenly felt scared.

could it be her relapse? could it be something evil?

i don't know.

a continuation from the plastic bags, i decided to unravel her secrets and what goes behind the sentence that made me cringe.

-----

A fraction in life of my grandma and her plastic bags

My 76 year old grandma have this obsession of collecting plastic bags from all of her shopping trips. Kept safely like jewels in her drawer, these plastic bags were folded like Samosas, waiting for her to unravel one day.

From the former shopping mavens, Yaohan and Oriental, to present day supermarket giant, NTUC Fairprice; I never knew the reason behind the plastic bags until today.

SYNOPSIS

-----

-----

for music, i will take excerpts from her favourite tunes and digitally enhanced it through pitch, volume, tempo, frequency and beat. with a mix of her tunes, from there i will create the sound for this film.

can silence be a form of sound?
the lag/lack of silence be part of the sound system?

for image editing, i will desaturate the pictures and have a slightly cool, warm tone it.

again, absence of image = an image?

for film editing wise, i will choose to edit it according to the beat of the sounds, with the complement of the multi frames.
the multi frames will illustrate space, and size of the objects that i will portray.

WEEK 4

semiotics.

-----

'Production and exchange of meanings, between members of a society or group.

not a fixed state but a process'

quote from week 4 semiotics and visual metaphors, 4d presentation slides

-----

the final picture.

i chose to juxtapose it with this sensual picture of the couple to signify the state of mind during love making. is it an act of desire? or a new beginning?

-----

cant wait for the next project

-----
WEEK 3

the decisive moment.

what is a decisive moment?
must it be the moment before an event?
could it just be a moment of there.

just being there?

i wanna explore that.

-----

was watching american beauty and this scene never fails to intrigue me.
watching it each time just tells a different story.
as if the plastic bag is a magnification of a certain event that is felt at the heart.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yfpPpu7bik

this century year old material deserves more than just containing takeaways from the kopitiam.

-----

i tried replicating that wind notion down at my void deck.
it failed.

therefore i'm doing it man made.
i strung the plastic bag with some fishing line and had it attached to the fan (at full speed)
man, it gorgeous.

its so controlled yet so much vigour and rigour as if it can be tamed.

and i have my shot.

now its on the header of this blog.

just some exposure and contrast done.

-----

the decisive moment of the plastic flight.

being used for almost every moment in our lives, plastic bags may not just be a containment for our groceries, food, umbrellas and trash.

WEEK 2

form and composition.

in my definition:
form - is the physical element that the subject takes
composition - is the way the subject and the image chooses to tell the story.

which is more important?
form or composition?

both are relative?
form cannot be controlled
whereas composition can be. (requires more discussion)

4 Dimension
is time based media used for storytelling purposes in art and design practices.

im particularly intrigued by zoetrope wheel shown to us and it reminded me largely about the Socrate's Plato's Cave.

but i think ultimately, the essence/core of the picture is the key in creating content, form and composition. without any basis to work on, nothing is achieved.
